Breaking News: Fright Night Remake to be in 3D??

How could this be scarier in 3D???

All it takes is for one crappy, over-hyped flick to hit it big and then you get a slew of copycat movies hoping to catch some fallout success.  Yes I’m talking about Avatar and its 3D.  It’s no news to my frequent readers that I wasn’t a big fan of Avatar at all.  AT ALL.  I hated the story, the message we were bombarded with for 3 hours, and the characters.  What I did like were the visuals and …. well, just the visuals.  And we know that Clash of the Titans (2010) saw the success of Avatar and wanted to jump on the 3D bandwagon (to disastrous results).  Now practically every fucking movie being released in 3D.

I’ve been on the fence with the Fright Night remake.  I just don’t think there’s any way to recapture those elements that made the original so goddamn good.  But when I started seeing the casting (most recently Colin Farrell and Toni Collette) I thought that the studio may actually be taking this one seriously.  And then we get this news reported by about rumors of DreamWorks considering releasing Fright Night in 3D.  ENOUGH HOLLYWOOD.  Why would you even do this?  It sounds gimmicky (because it is) and it shows how little faith you have in the project so you need to put it in 3D for a little extra insurance.  The original mention of it is literally buried in an article in Variety.  Seriously; look at the very end of the article from Variety to see the 3D mention of Fright Night.  Well I’m no longer on the fence about this one.  I think its a huge mistake to remake Fright Night — and releasing it in 3D confirms my suspicions.

What’s next?  Releasing pornos in 3D??  Hey; that’s not a bad idea …

I LOVE Evil Ed … one of my all time favourite characters!!

And my question stands:  Who the hell is gonna play the Fearless Vampire Killer Peter Vincent, made famous by Roddy McDowall??  Is the role filled yet and they aren’t telling us, or are they still undecided who’s gonna play this very important and pivotal role?  When I hear anything I’ll pass it along.

Stay Bloody!!!

Porn would be absolutely terrifying in 3D… Then you could start doing porn reviews!

Yeah that’s it, Hollywood, milk the cash cow dry, then make wallets from the hide… well they’ll certainly make their initial score back from the tweenies who don’t even realise that this is a remake of what we know will be a better movie than what they produce.

The trouble is (apart from the obvious) that so much has been seen onscreen, in movies and TV, that was at least partly inspired by Fright Night (the horror/comedy combo, the snarky teen vampires, has been explored and expanded by Buffy for instance ), that a remake will look like a ripoff of these (a bit like when Bicentennial Man was accused of being a ripoff of Star Trek’s Data character, despite being a movie adaptation of stories written decades before Trek).

    • Really any way you slice it, this Fright Night remake is a huge mistake. I really hope I’m wrong and it rocks and I eat crow. And if it is good I’ll be more than happy to give it a glowing review and admit I was wrong.

      I just don’t think I’m gonna be wrong 🙂

Jeez, they really screwed the pooch on that one! There is a bandwagon Hollywood is riding because big names aren’t enough to get folks to movies, especially with the reputation of remakes, so 3D allows them to make $17 a ticket and dumb idiots who think they have to see it in 3D will go and see it when normally they would have waited 5 months for it to make it to DVD. It’s pathetic, desperate… I am bummed. I hope the rumor is wrong. It’s a good enough story–does not need 3D. I loved the original and it was part of a great period of time but I always felt that it lacked true horror and made too much fun of itself. I would like to see a version of it more like “Disturbia” (one of my favs) where it’s like the kid next door may or may not be paranoid… Something darker and less campy. If they could do that, I might like it better than the original. Hey, and buddy, I’m with you on 3D porn but that means the men watching it are going to have to see dicks coming at them in 3D. Don’t think that’s gonna happen any time soon.

    • I don’t think I thought through the 3D porn!!! A 3D version of Ron Jeremy coming at me doesn’t sound like a pleasant experience!!

If they keep jacking up the price of tickets just for 3D and think I’m gonna pay for this fad …. Hollywood can go hell themselves!!

  5. I’ve had enough of 3D movies. I find it hilarious that you have to pay for the glasses every single time, and they encourage you to drop them in a box to be “recycled” at the end of the film. Um, what? I just paid $3 or so dollars more for these glasses, and why the hell am I giving them back? Considering most 3D movies come out in both versions, so far we’ve been able to pay for the regular movie and slip in the 3D one with our glasses. Well, we haven’t really gone out of our way to ask, not wanting to tip them off if they did require the tacked on fee regardless.

Personally, that image above has always made me think of “smell-o-vision.” Oh the vampiric halitosis! Yikes!

I don’t know who could fill Roddy McDowell’s shoes. After Vincent Price, he’s one of my all time favorite actors. The only one who immediately springs to mind as having the right combination of age, dedication, and all around coolness is Christopher Walken. On the other hand, Doug Jones of Abe Sapien and Gollum fame kind of reminds me a bit of Roddy McDowell. But hey why not do a little bit of recasting and make it an actual horror movie host(ess). Cast Elvira. Now THAT would be funny! Her movie is one of my all time favorite horror-comedies… right up there with Evil Dead II and Ghoulies.

    • I like that idea of casting Elvira!!! That’d be friggin’ hilarious. I’m completely DONE with the 3D fad. It’s gotten to the point that a movie coming out in 3D would actually make me wait for it to come out on DVD (no matter how bad I wanted to see it).

My vote to play the vampire killer, Peter Vincent, in the Fright Night remake: Doug “Pinhead” Bradley. He has that British charm and enough “swarminess” to pull it off, I think.
