New Horror Movie Update: Brad Anderson’s The Vanishing on 7th Street; Teaser Trailer for King’s Short Story The Boogeyman; Release Dates for The Walking Dead & Craven’s My Soul To Take?

I think everyone knows how much I love Brad Anderson’s SESSION 9 (possibly the best psychological thriller/horror flick ever); so that’s why I’ve been tracking his new upcoming flick THE VANISHING ON 7TH STREET.  This one stars Hayden Christensen, John Leguizamo, & Thandie Newton & recently there were a ton of stills, a 6-min long making-of feature, and the official website released/launched.  For those of you that need some reminding, here’s the plot summary:

A mysterious, seemingly global blackout causes countless populations to simply vanish, leaving only their clothes and possessions behind. A small handful of survivors band together in a dimly-lit tavern on 7th Street, struggling to combat the apocalyptic horror. Realizing they may in fact be the last people on earth, the darkness hones in on them alone.

This plot with the talents/mind of Brad Anderson sounds like a great fucking project!!  Check out a few of the stills below and make sure to check out the official THE VANISHING ON 7TH STREET website!!

TEASER TRAILER FOR KING’S THE BOOGEYMAN:

Where would we be without Stephen King?  It seems that man has singlehandedly kept both our TV movies and the big screen alive with original ideas and stories.  Well lucky for us it doesn’t look as though he’s slowing down anytime soon.  THE BOOGEYMAN may only be a short film, but I’d rather see a solid, original short than a full length remake yawn-fest!!  Here’s what this project is about, straight from the press release:

Based on the short story by Stephen King, THE BOOGEYMAN is an ambitious short film directed by Irish filmmaker Gerard Lough and starring Simon Fogarty and Michael Parle.

The film has intricate visual effects that are CGI as well as in camera. It also feature excellent makeup effects by one of the best artists in Ireland – Julie Ann Ryan. This, combined with a faithful adaption of King’s much loved source material, strong performances, stunning visuals and a creepy electronic score, will make for a very memorable 30-minute movie, which will be shown at film festivals all over the world.

Synopsis
When Andrew Billings (Simon Fogarty) goes to see a psychologist to explain how an evil creature that lives in his closet is responsible for the deaths of his three children, he is met with disbelief. But as the story progresses, both Dr. Harper (Michael Parle) and the audience will start to consider the possibility that this “boogeyman” might be real after all.

Sounds pretty damn good to me, and if it can erase the 2005 BOOGEYMAN from my mind then even better!!  Check out the teaser trailer below:

RELEASE DATE SET FOR THE WALKING DEAD?:

Well it was just a matter of time.  With all the news bombarding the internet about AMC’s THE WALKING DEAD project it was just a matter of time before the release date was leaked.  Bloody-Disgusting.com is reporting that an unconfirmed source has told them that THE WALKING DEAD TV project will have its debut on October 8th, 2010!!  Has there been a more anticipated genre release than this one in the last 5 years?  I don’t think so.  I’m hoping that if this isn’t the correct date that it’ll be moved up sooner rather than later.  We’ll see.

RELEASE DATE & TEASER ART FOR CRAVEN’S MY SOUL TO KEEP:

I really haven’t been excited about an upcoming Wes Craven project for quite some time (I could care fucking less about SCREAM 4).  But the news about his new one, MY SOUL TO TAKE has me pretty excited to see if Craven still “has it”.  Here’s the plot summary:

In the sleepy town of Riverton, legend tells of a serial killer who swore he would return to murder the seven children born the night he died. Now, 16 years later, people are disappearing again. Has the psychopath been reincarnated as one of the seven teens, or did he survive the night he was left for dead? Only one of the kids knows the answer.

Sounds pretty promising and it also sounds like familiar territory that Craven should be able to run with and scare the shit out of us!!  I’m just hoping we don’t get Craven’s version of DRAG ME TO HELL (blech!!).Well now we have the teaser art for it (above, to the left) and a possible release date.  This was originally set for an October 29th, 2010 release, but Universal announced that they were moving the film up to an October 8th debut.  Sweet.  Between this one and THE WALKING DEAD (see above story) October 8th is looking to be a pretty kick ass day.

I’ll keep ya up to date.

Stay Bloody!!!

All of these look great and I want to see them all. Thanks for the update.

  2. Buzz says:

NOOOOOOOOOOO! Not Hayden Christensen!!! Now there’s something really scary… the fact that he still has a career!

    • I’ll be honest with ya Buzz … I’m one of the few people out there that actually enjoyed STAR WARS EPISODES 1-3. Are they perfect movies … not by a long stretch. But I found the stories really engrossing (especially parts 2 & 3), and the acting was way better than episodes 4-6. I know I’m in the minority (again), but REVENGE OF THE SITH is a pretty damn good flick!!

      • Buzz says:

Hell I agree with you man. I’m right there with you as one of the minority that actually really enjoyed the prequel movies I think the story is thorughly enjoyable and an engaging. However in my opinion the does not work because of Hayden Christensen but rather in spite of him. I think he’s aweful and drags what are pretty good movies down and if I was left in any doubt of this, Jumper cemented it in my mind. Maybe he’ll be better in horror though, who knows? He did start off as a certain paper boy after all…

      • I really didn’t think Hayden Christensen was all that bad. I really think that a better director could have gotten a better performance out of him. But I’ve already ranted and raved about my thoughts on Lucas as a director (blech)!! I have no doubt that Brad Anderson will get a much better performance out of him. If you haven’t yet seen SESSION 9, go out and buy it right now!!!

    • l3pr3chaun says:

LOL. I feel ya Buzz. Hayden is absent of talent. Horrible actor. But great director and I’ll bank on the director coming through on this one. I also liked Star Wars Ep.1-3 inspite of Hayden’s bad acting. Natalie Portman & Ewan MacGregor carried those films. Plus any time Samuel L. Jackson graces the screen it’s a highlight!

  3. Katie says:

Vanishing on 7th Street looks great and I’m certainly going to keep my eye out for that one!
I’m always game for anything Stephen King (although I usually find his books are WAY scarier than is screen adaptations). It looks good, but I would recommend the short story be read also (either before or after). It’s a creepy little story that keeps you guessing and I’m not sure how it will translate to film. It seems my imagination is always more active and scary than what ends up on screen.
I certainly hope that release date for the Walking Dead is accurate. I cannot wait!
As a sidebar, I noticed the comments on Hayden Christensen. He isn’t a great actor, but it worked in the Star Wars prequels. I put off watching them for a long time because of the fond memories I had of the original three. But once I did watch them, I found I actually enjoyed them and they were not too super over the top that it took me out of the film. I haven’t seen Jumpers because it didn’t tantillize me into watching it, but it seemed as if it could be poorly acted. Let’s hope that his personality works in this new film because it seems it could be awesome!

    • I’m with ya totally on VANISHING on 7TH STREET Katie. I also agree that everyone should read the King short story before seeing the short. The story in pretty deep and layered; I hope they can pull it off as a short film.

If I hear anything about THE WALKING DEAD changing premier dates I’ll let you know immediately.

I also really enjoyed STAR WARS eps 1-3. Really good action and stories. I just wonder how much better they could have been if they had a competent writer/director who knew how to write dialogue for female characters!!

  4. Buzz says:

Seems like I’ve unintentionally created a Hayden Christensen thread. Sorry Scott! :P

I’m actually writing a review of the prequel’s at the moment, which I’m intending to post somewhere else on the web. It will encapsulate my feelings for the Star War’s prequel’s (pretty good) and Hayden Christensen (really bad). When I’m finished I’ll let you guy’s know when and where it is.

I haven’t actually seen any of Brad Anderson’s film but you all seem to rate him quite highly so I’ll be checking out season 9 pretty soon.

I’m always a bit wary of Stephen King I find that his stories hit as often as they miss. Although I’ll say that the reason that they miss most of the time is due to bad directing rather than any kind of actually fault with the story. And being a short the director should be trying harder so who knows, could be tons of horrific fun.

Zombie’s and Wes Craven what can I say? I haven’t actually seen anything by Wes Craven or with zombie’s in it that I didn’t like. Even George Romero’s Diary of the Dead I thought was ok…ish. I will say that I’m leaning slightly more to My Soul to Take, as I always tend to lean to unexplainable supernatural phenomena. It does sound quite a lot like Nightmare on Elm Street though. Oh well just because it’s been done before dosn’t mean that it won’t be good :)

    • No worries on the Hayden Christensen thread Buzz!!! I think eps 1-3 are damn good and I can’t stand it when people dismiss them. In some ways I think they are superior to eps 4-6!!

You definitely need to go see SESSION 9 from Brad Anderson … an amazing movie.

I totally agree; King’s adaptations to the big screen are VERY hit or miss. Two of the better ones are Romero’s THE DARK HALF & Tom Holland’s THINNER. I really liked both of those flicks.

MY SOUL TO TAKE is starting to look suspiciously like A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET-ish. We’ll see.
