New Horror Movie Updates: Trailer for the Juicy Meat Grinder; JJ Abrams’ 7 Minutes in Heaven; Stills from Jim Mickle’s Stake Land; Debut of Craven’s My Soul To Take Trailer
Well I’m at the crossroads again with this first one. I have a love-hate affair (mostly “hate”) with the flood of Asian “extreme” horror flicks that we’ve been bombarded with over the last many years. All of them have kick ass trailers but when it comes to the actual film most of them are extremely boring & slow-paced. And if they do happen to be gory, the gore is so over the top that if fails to shock or entertain — it’s more like watching a gore film made by the Monty Python troupe (minus the witty dialogue). “What are some examples,” you ask? Off the top of my head how about TOKYO GORE POLICE & THE BUTCHER? Seriously people; how could a flick with the title TOKYO GORE POLICE have been so goddamn boring??
Now enter MEAT GRINDER from Thailand. Here’s the plot summary:
A proud member of the “torture porn” sub-genre, MEAT GRINDER is an unforgiving horror film which slipped passed the BBFC uncut. Destined for cult status, the over-the-top gorefest stars Mai as a deranged woman who runs a noodle stall and is hearing voices in her head all the time. When she finds a dying man in her stall one night, she gets the idea to chop him up and grind the body parts into meatballs as ingredients for her noodle soup. It turns out to be a popular dish, and as the stall gets more and more business, she must find a steady supply of fresh human meat to feed her customers …
Now check out the trailer:
Yeah I know; it looks pretty good and extremely gory. But I’ve been down this road before and have been duped. Oh who the fuck am I trying to kid? I’m gonna see this one just like all the others. Hopefully this one won’t end as so many before it. Time will tell.
JJ ABRAMS’ 7 MINUTES IN HEAVEN:
The story goes that the idea for CLOVERFIELD came to Abrams when he was in Japan with his son. He thought about GODZILLA and why a giant creature never attacked America. Boom … CLOVERFIELD was born. I’d love to know what influenced 7 MINUTES IN HEAVEN, which comes from the mind of Jack Bender (who directed the final episode of LOST). That’s right; Abrams and his Bad Robot company are developing a project named after the teenage make out game. The only plot details available so far is that two teens go into a closet for their 7 minutes of heaven, and when they come out all their friends are dead. Bet those 2 teens are gay now!!
I’ll give you more details as they become available.
STILLS & TEASER TRAILER FROM JIM MICKLE’S STAKE LAND:
I’m excited about this one. Back in 2006 Jim Mickles’ put out MULBERRY STREET which was picked up by After Dark Horrorfest, and to my total surprise it kicked ass (see my review here). Well Mickles finally has a new one coming out; the vampire tale STAKE LAND. It’s playing at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (get the complete line up of films here), and stars genre fav Danielle Harris. Here’s the plot summary:
In the aftermath of a vampire epidemic, a teen is taken in by a grizzled vampire hunter on a road trip through a post-apocalyptic America, battling both the bloodsuckers and a fundamentalist militia that interprets the plague as the Lord’s work.
Sounds like the kind of vampire flick the genre needs in order to wash away the faggy TWILIGHT sucktards from our minds!! And judging by the stills and the teaser trailer, STAKE LAND looks like it’ll do just that. What do ya think?
CRAVEN’S DEBUT OF MY SOUL TO TAKE TRAILER:
If you missed PIRANHA 3D this weekend (and I urge you all to see it; my review is here), besides missing a really kick ass genre flick, you also missed the new trailer for Craven’s new film, MY SOUL TO TAKE. I was excited about this project in its early stages, but the more I learned about it the more it kinda sounds like a variation of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET. Here’s the plot summary:
In the sleepy town of Riverton, legend tells of a serial killer who swore he would return to murder the seven children born the night he died. Now, 16 years later, people are disappearing again. Has the psychopath been reincarnated as one of the seven teens, or did he survive the night he was left for dead? Only one of the kids knows the answer.
I know Craven has another kick ass genre flick in him. Maybe it’ll be this one (it sure as hell won’t be SCREAM 4). Check out the trailer and look for this one in theaters on October 8, 2010. What do you think?

First, I’d like to say that you are a hundred percent correct about Asian films: they seem a little slow-paced. But I tend to think that sometimes the American public is a little impatient on all fronts, so I give them a try and end up liking a lot of them. As for Meat Grinder, it reminds me of a Japanese film I watched (sorry, I can’t remember the name right now). There was a lady in this town that used aborted fetuses and made them into dumplings and when women ate them, they would get firmer skin and urges they hadn’t had in years. I was fascintated and nauseous all at the same time! What I’m trying to say is, I don’t think I’ll watch this Meat Grinder. Unless someone tells me it’s kick-ass!
Because of the success of Cloverfield (at least with me), I will probably watch whatever Abrams comes out with next.
Stake Land is getting me excited for the reincarnation of the bad-ass vampire (I’m not a fan of Twilight either!). The trailer didn’t give away much, but it still intrigues me.
You are right about My Soul to Take. It seems almost like just another Elm Street type movie. However, I’m almost willing to give a try based on the fact that it seems to be well done in many ways. It might be nice to see something a little new with a familiar ring to it instead of just a full out remake of something. I’m going to keep my eye out for this one!
I sometime think it’s my American perspective that finds Asian horror films slow and plodding, and then I watch another one and realize no … those films are friggin’ slow as shit! I’ll let you know in MEAT GRINDER is worthwhile. If you think of that movie where a woman is serving fetuses for dumplings, let me know. It sounds just depraved enough to be enjoyable.
I’m definitely giving MY SOUL TO TAKE a shot. Like you said Katie … it looks well done.
the one with the dumplings was from three extremes.. by takashi miike. or was it takeshi..?
Aahhh that’s right. Thanks!!
I got burned out on the Asian ghost story flicks quickly, but as you know, I like the Asian horror, particularly the over-the-top ones. I can’t deny that they sometimes take their sweet time getting to the point though. Meat Grinder looks crazy…it’s a must see for me!
I am REALLY excited about Stake Land! The trailer doesn’t give much up, but Mulberry Street was great. A perfect, creepy atmosphere and great characters, I eagerly await this new effort based on that alone.
That is my first time seeing the new Wes Craven trailer. You know, I will probably end up seeing this at some point, but that trailer wouldn’t have me running to theatres.
I’m with ya on MULBERRY STREET. I loved that movie. It was a unique take on both the zombie and creature flicks.
I’m pretty surprised with MY SOUL TO TAKE …. the poster is boring and so is the trailer. Makes me wonder about the final product. But like you said; I’ll check it out eventually but I won’t be running to the theater to see it.
the film with the lady and the fetus was called “Dumplings” it was and extended version of a film called “Three… Extremes”. Hope this is what u were after.
Perfect. Thanks for the info Matty!!
