Dracula: The Vampire and the Voivode (2010)

Here’s another pre-Halloween treat for all you Dracula and vampire lovers. DRACULA: THE VAMPIRE AND THE VOIVODE is an extremely comprehensive documentary that delves into the lives of Bram Stoker and the 15th century ruler (or Voivode) of Wallachia, Vlad the Impaler. And when I say ‘comprehensive,’ I mean COM-PRE-HEN-SIVE!!

Writer, director, and cameraman Michael Bayley Huges did an amazing amount of research to give us the complete story of Bram Stoker’s DRACULA, a novel we’re told that is only second to the Bible in sales. Hughes goes deep into Stoker’s life and builds the story of what led him to write his enduring classic that forever changed the face of horror and in fact helped to shape the face of horror. We learn things about Stoker that I think his own mother didn’t know!! And from using Stoker’s own detailed notes he kept over the years, Hughes was able to put together a pretty accurate account of what led Stoker up to the point of creating his iconic character.

The second half of the documentary then delves into the life and times of that crazy nut, Vlad the Impaler. Hughes separates the myth from the actual man and gives us a clear account of how Stoker came to learn about this character, and how Vlad inspired Stoker to create his ever-popular vampire myth around this real-life ruler.

The man himself, Bram Stoker

DRACULA: THE VAMPIRE AND THE VOIVODE is an incredibly detailed documentary, and if you think you already know everything there is to know about either Bram Stoker or Vlad the Impaler, well you definitely need to check this out. I guarantee you’re gonna learn way more than you ever thought you’d know about this topic. Hughes interviews such experts as Nicolae Paduraru (the President of the Transylvanian Society of Dracula), Dennis McIntyre (from the Bram Stoker Society), and Tina Rath (from the London Dracula Society), to name a few, to give us a most complete story. This is an incredibly well researched documentary that will easily replace a bookshelf full of books on both Stoker’s DRACULA and Vlad the Impaler. Definitely check this one out!!

DRACULA: THE VAMPIRE AND THE VOIVODE will be hitting DVD on October 4th, 2011.

My Summary:

Director: Michael Bayley Huges (& writer & cameraman)

Plot: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Gore: 0 out of 10 skulls

Zombie Mayhem: 0 out of 5 brains

I think mr. Stoker looks a lot like Russell Crowe! Maybe Russell should try writing too! Last time i heard he was singing… BOOH! HOO! HOO! (I’m sorry… I just don’t like Russel… Thank god he wasn’t in ‘Prometheus’!)
