Sam Raimi Talks about the Evil Dead Remake & Calls it “Gut-Wrenching” … Yeah; I know
MTV caught up with filmmaker Sam Raimi about his upcoming EVIL DEAD remake and got the lowdown on what Raiimi thinks of the project. If Raimi’s SPIDER-MAN trilogy and his DRAG ME TO HELL showed me anything it’s that Raimi has lost some of his edge. Take for example the new AMAZING SPIDER-MAN … this film accomplished in it’s first 30 minutes what Raimi couldn’t do in all three of his SPIDER-MAN films … thrill and excite us. And now with his recent comments to MTV about his much dreaded EVIL DEAD remake (at least dreaded by horror fans), I’m convinced that Raimi needs to get away from Hollywood and go back to his indie roots if he ever wants to make another film a horror fan would enjoy. Read on.
As for whether he sees the new film as honoring his original, Raimi said he doesn’t approach it that way:
“I don’t think about it like that. I just think Fede Alvarez has really made a great horror movie,” he said. “It’s scary. The actors are great in it. It’s really gut-wrenching, real low budget, and intense.“
Raimi also confirmed with MTV what we’ve known about for some time: that Ash will not appear in the new film, “No, that character’s not in this movie.”
So what’s so bad about the remake being, ‘gut-wrenching’? When I think of the original EVIL DEAD and EVIL DEAD 2 (which, by the way I prefer over the original), I think of words and phrases such as, “kickass,” “balls-to-the-wall,” “a punch to the gut” … ya know; shit like that. ’Gut-wrenching’ makes me think of a term to describe STEEL MAGNOLIAS!!
The EVIL DEAD remake is directed by Fede Alvarez, written by Alvarez, Diablo Cody, Raimi, and Rodo Sayagues Mendez, and stars Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jessica Lucas, and Elizabeth Blackmore. Here’s the plot crunch:
Five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin where they discover a Book of the Dead and unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.
Are you looking forward to this gut-wrenching tale?
Stay Bloody!!!

Nope, not looking forward to this at all. I’ve softened my opinion on remakes in recent years, if the remake can bring something new to the mix while also retaining what made the original worth watching. But there’s nothing been revealed about this fiasco that suggests it will be successful. Maybe deadly serious, like the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET remake. Will it be a good film in itself? Maybe. But the fact that it’s been attached to the EVIL DEAD NAME WILL ONLY WORK AGAINST IT.
Agreed, Derek. Sounds like its a marketing decision to use the title, EVIL DEAD!!
Seems to me that they are just using the EVIL DEAD name to promote this movie. Why not just do a new movie which takes inspiration from the EVIL DEAD series? Philosophical question: if it doesn’t have Ash in it (and perhaps more importantly doesn’t have Bruce Campbell in it) is it really an EVIL DEAD movie. Raimi should give the people what they want… EVIL DEAD 4! Maybe set it in Miami, co-staring Jeffrey Donovan and Gabrielle Anwar, that might be fun.
