Universal Names Director of the Upcoming Videodrome Remake. F**k Me!!

I prayed.  I prayed hard.  And for a while I thought my prayers were answered.  This is in itself odd being that I’m a confirmed atheist!!  But I should’ve known Universal was up to something due to them being so quiet.  When I first started running Anything Horror I wrote my review of VIDEODROME (my review); which is easily in my top five favorite horror films of all time.  Then by March 13, 2010 I was reporting on rumors of a VIDEODROME remake (my article) and that’s when i started praying to an empty sky hoping Universal abandoned the idea all together.  Not only is Universal moving forward with a remake of one of David Cronenberg’s best films, but according to deadline.com, they’ve named a director.  The man:  Adam Berg.

Berg must have some crazy, mad directorial credits of films that push the boundaries and blur the line between good taste and out-right offensiveness.  Right?  Nope. This will be Berg’s directorial debut.  His experience lies in commercials and some short films.  Yikes.  Is this really the best choice for a VIDEODROME remake, Universal??  Seriously?

Ehren Kruger has written the script and is also producing with Daniel Bobker.  In case you’re not familiar with Kruger’s works, he’s the man who “wrote” TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN, TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON, and is penning the next in the TRANSFORMERS franchise.  Yeah, I know.  This has “disaster” written all over it.  In case you’re not familiar with it, here’s a brief plot crunch:

James Woods starred in the original Videodrome as the head of Civic TV Channel 83. He makes his station relevant by programming Videodrome, a series that depicts torture and murder that transfixes viewers. When Kruger and Bobker set it up at Universal, they planned to modernize the concept, infusing it with the possibilities of nano-technology and blow it up into a large-scale sci-fi action thriller.

Oh fuck me!!  More on this one as it becomes available.

What do you think?

Stay Bloody!!!

Cronenberg remade THE FLY… and in capable hands… he did a stellar job. The VIDEODROME remake appears to be handed off to a bunch of amateurs with marketing savvy. It could be hit or miss. I say “miss.”

it is upsetting there will be a remake of this. it isn’t needed, like remaking naked lunch. you just can’t and shouldn’t do it.
i have seen videodrome a few times and i can’t honestly say i loved it, but i look at it as artwork.. movies such as that. who wants a print of the mona lisa when you can have the original.

    • VIDEODROME is unique, Geeker, for the exact reason you mentioned. It’s a horror film (loaded, of course, with Cronenberg’s imagery of body horror), but it also has, I think, one foot in the experimental film arena.

I think VIDEODROME is a brilliant film and was way ahead of its time. Think about if Cronenberg were to sit down today & write it — all the technology that’s available nowadays & how desensitized & “unplugged” we all are from each other & the world!! The only chance this film has as a remake is if Cronenberg were to write & direct it himself. Period.

I would have never have thought that VIDEODROME would ever get a remake. It is the very of an obscure cult movie (probably the best example of one as well). I think a large part of it’s charm was it’s relatively small budget and relatively unknown (for the time) actors. I’m sorry but I complacently fail to see how throwing more money and better know actors will improve on what is already a freaking great movie, in any way…. And certainly not by the guy that did TRANSFORMERS. Oh yeah I’m sure that’s what we all wanted to see more of in our VIDEODROME movie, more special effects, more explosions and a PG13 rating. Goody :(

I completely agree with what everyone has said above. The sad thing is, if it comes to fruition and gets made and released, someone out there will think this is an awesome movie and the original will probably fall into obscurity except for all of the die hard horror fans out there. Leave Cronenberg’s work along Hollywood!

    • Here here, Katie!! Remaking classic slasher & zombie flicks are one thing, but trying to remake a Cronenberg flick is a pretty stupid move, especially if the new director is an “up & comer”!! Cronenberg was & still is one of the most original voices in the horror genre!!
