There’s long been rumors about a sequel to the 1996 smash hit, INDEPENDENCE DAY. It’s pretty much confirmed that there will indeed be a sequel and for a time it was rumored that the sequel was going to be split into two films. Both Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum are supposedly going to be returning in the sequel, but the one question that remains is whether or not Will Smith is going to reprise his role as Captain Steven Hiller. In a recent interview with IndieWire.com, director Roland Emmerich talks about the sequel, talks very briefly about the script(s), but we’re no closer to knowing whether Smith will be involved.
In the interview, Indiewire asked Emmerich point blank if Smith would be starring in the film. Though he didn’t really answer the question, he did mention that there are two versions of the script written. One with Smith’s character in it and the other without him. He went on to say that the script by Jamie Vanderbilt is “looking good,” though he didn’t specify which version he was referring to. My guess, and this is completely just my speculation, is that Smith may be holding out for a shitload of money. Either that or he also wants his unwatchable son, Jaden Smith, to be in it as well. Blech!! If they were smart, they’d bring Jaden in for a cameo and then have an alien kill him off. You’d get more cheers and applause than when the White House was blown up in the original!!
Emmerich did confirm, though, that the sequel will be a story told in one film, rather than two:
“I thought about spending four years of my life on one movie, and I didn’t want to turn into something from the movie,” said Emmerich. “It’s a movie about aliens; I don’t want to turn into an alien.”
What do you think? Personally I don’t care one way or the other is Will Smith is in the sequel. Do. Not. Care.
