M. Night Shyamalan is Back with Sundowning

M. Night Shyamalan. What name is more associated with disappointment and let-down? He came on the scene hard and fast with the runaway hit, THE SIXTH SENSE, and soon after descended into “has been” status. Personally I enjoyed UNBREAKABLE and SIGNS. But after these films he pretty much lost it. THE VILLAGE was insulting and forced, THE LADY IN THE WATER was self-absorbed, THE HAPPENING was laughable and embarrassing, and I won’t even mention THE LAST AIRBENDER and AFTER EARTH!!

But Shyamalan is back again with SUNDOWNING, his big return to creepy genre films. SUNDOWNING, which is currently filming, is written and directed by Shyamalan and stars Kathryn HahnEd OxenbouldErica Lynne Marszalek, Peter McRobbie, Olivia DeJonge, and Deanna Dunagan. The plot is being kept guarded, but according to The Wrap;

Hahn plays a single mother whose two young children visit their grandparents… and things go very wrong. Oxenbould plays her son, who is protective of his sister.

The term “sundowning” itself is a medical term and according to the Mayo Clinic website:

[“Sundowning”] refers to a state of confusion at the end of the day and into the night. Sundowning can cause a variety of behaviors, such as confusion, anxiety, aggression or ignoring directions. Sundowning can also lead to pacing or wandering.

SUNDOWNING has an estimated budget of around $200,000, which is a marked difference for Shyamalan after his last two films (THE LAST AIRBENDER and AFTER EARTH). I’m looking forward to seeing this one. When Shyamalan is on his game I think he’s a pretty damn amazing storyteller. And besides there’s not a Smith anywhere in sight of tho one!!

What do you think? Are you willing to give Shyamalan another shot?

    I heard that Olivia De Jonge and Ed Oxenbould play brother and sister? I’ve checked out some of her stuff and it seems legit….

    I probably won’t run right out and see this one, but I’ll probably give it a try eventually. I agree…when he is on his game, his stories are amazing!
