Simon West Set to Direct Remake of The Blob

The Blob posterWho doesn’t love THE BLOB? That shapeless, spineless, amorphous killing mass? I grew up watching Steve McQueen battling the ooze with a ‘tude and I also loved the sequel. BEWARE! THE BLOB (1972) was a worthy follow up that had great energy and fun. But I think the 1988 remake of THE BLOB, directed by Chuck Russell, really captured the essence of the creature and just how brutal it could be. Now we’re gonna get the chance to see how The Blob would fair in the age of technology. According to, Simon West will be directing the upcoming THE BLOB remake. You might recognize Simon West’s name. He’s mainly associated with action flicks. He directed 1997s CON AIR, 2001s LARA CROFT: TOMB RAIDER, and 2012s THE EXPENDABLES 2 (to name a few).

I hope everyone is familiar with the basic story of THE BLOB:

The story sees a gelatinous alien life-form emerge from a crashed meteor and begin to ooze through Downtingon, Pennsylvania, eating the townsfolk as it goes.

The Blob homeless

In the 1988 remake, The Blob even had a solution of how to take care of the homeless!!

Pretty simple setup, but there’s a lot of fun that comes from it. West is excited to get his hands on this remake particularly for the chance to update the titular creature:

“With modern CGI we can now fully realize the potential of The Blob. The world I create will be totally believable, immersive and emotionally satisfying. It’s a thrill to introduce an enduring icon to a wider audience and a whole new era of fans.”

Okay, I get his enthusiasm. I’m just a little worried about a CGI Blob. CGI still hasn’t made blood spurts and fire look realistic. I’m hoping it will do better with the movement of the Blob. And for the record the 1988 THE BLOB remake didn’t use CGI and the creature looked fantastic. Just saying’. But Jack H Harris, the executive producer from the original 1958 film, will be back as on e of the exec producers so that’s promising.

That Blob didn't stand a chance against Steve McQueen!!

That Blob didn’t stand a chance against Steve McQueen!!

Other than the emphasis on the CGI I’m excited to see THE BLOB return to theaters. The current horror landscape needs more creature features, and I’m not talking about zombies!! Bring it on! What do you think? Are you excited to be getting an updated THE BLOB?

Stay Bloody!!!

B-movie goodness. It has to be silly and a bit camp. As a nod, they could perhaps have the original ‘The Blob’ theme song playing on a radio in a random scene at one point.

    • That’s why I think Chuck Russell’s 1988 remake was just about perfect. It was campy, cheesy, had really fun “blob effects,” and is the kind of movie I can watch over and over again. I hope West doesn’t try and make it too serious of a film!! I’d love to see some nods to both the original and the 1988 remake. Maybe have some posters of some Steve McQueen movies on the wall or something. I love your idea of using the original theme!!

Agreed. Perhaps the ’88 remake of The Blob is an overlooked example of a film that improved upon the original? I know that would be considered tantamount to witchcraft in some quarters, but the original has problems with it that the ’88 version kind of fixed. Have you ever noticed how many times people say other character’s names, in the original? I lost count how many times people said “Steve” at the beginning or end of a sentence.
