Who doesn’t love THE BLOB? That shapeless, spineless, amorphous killing mass? I grew up watching Steve McQueen battling the ooze with a ‘tude and I also loved the sequel. BEWARE! THE BLOB (1972) was a worthy follow up that had great energy and fun. But I think the 1988 remake of THE BLOB, directed by Chuck Russell, really captured the essence of the creature and just how brutal it could be. Now we’re gonna get the chance to see how The Blob would fair in the age of technology. According to Deadline.com, Simon West will be directing the upcoming THE BLOB remake. You might recognize Simon West’s name. He’s mainly associated with action flicks. He directed 1997s CON AIR, 2001s LARA CROFT: TOMB RAIDER, and 2012s THE EXPENDABLES 2 (to name a few).
I hope everyone is familiar with the basic story of THE BLOB:
The story sees a gelatinous alien life-form emerge from a crashed meteor and begin to ooze through Downtingon, Pennsylvania, eating the townsfolk as it goes.
Pretty simple setup, but there’s a lot of fun that comes from it. West is excited to get his hands on this remake particularly for the chance to update the titular creature:
“With modern CGI we can now fully realize the potential of The Blob. The world I create will be totally believable, immersive and emotionally satisfying. It’s a thrill to introduce an enduring icon to a wider audience and a whole new era of fans.”
Okay, I get his enthusiasm. I’m just a little worried about a CGI Blob. CGI still hasn’t made blood spurts and fire look realistic. I’m hoping it will do better with the movement of the Blob. And for the record the 1988 THE BLOB remake didn’t use CGI and the creature looked fantastic. Just saying’. But Jack H Harris, the executive producer from the original 1958 film, will be back as on e of the exec producers so that’s promising.
Other than the emphasis on the CGI I’m excited to see THE BLOB return to theaters. The current horror landscape needs more creature features, and I’m not talking about zombies!! Bring it on! What do you think? Are you excited to be getting an updated THE BLOB?
