It seems the new buzz phrase for all upcoming horror releases is, “it’s the scariest film of the year.” I noticed this started towards the end of 2014 with the release of THE BABADOOK. Myself and Deggsy (who wrote the review) both really enjoyed THE BABADOOK, but was it scary? Not really, but that’s okay. It wasn’t written and made to be a scary film. Now with the release and success of IT FOLLOWS, which was also promoted as the scariest film you’ll ever see, it seems that “scary” is the new PR word being slapped on every film. Again, IT FOLLOWS is a terrific film and I enjoyed it, but I didn’t find it scary. As the reviewer wrote, IT FOLLOWS goes more for establishing dread, not scares.
This brings me to the upcoming film, THE GALLOWS. THE GALLOWS is written and directed by Travis Cluff and Chris Lofing and stars Cassidy Gifford, Pfeifer Brown, Ryan Shoos, Reese Mishler, and Alexis Schneider. THE GALOWS is coming from genre powerhouses Blumhouse Productions and New Line Cinema and is being described as I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER-esque. And of course it’s also being described as the scariest movie of 2015. Hhmmm. Check out the plot crunch:
20 years after a horrific accident during a small town school play, students at the school resurrect the failed show in a misguided attempt to honor the anniversary of the tragedy – but soon discover that some things are better left alone.
I’m looking forward to this solely because it sounds like an old-school slasher flick, and I can never get enough of those!! THE GALLOWS is slated for a July 10, 2015 release. For now all we have is a recently released teaser trailer to go on. Check it out:
What do you think? Too scary to sit through? Maybe. I’m’ just hoping for a good old fashioned kick ass slasher flick!! What do you think?
