After their rather creepy real-life CATFISH mockumentary, directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman entered the world of the PARANORMAL ACTIVITY franchise. This directing duo gave us the third and fourth installments of of this franchise, and yet somehow their careers weren’t ruined. But it seemed this foray into the horror genre gave them a small taste of the potential of the genre. So much so, in fact, that for their next film they’ve re-teamed up with Blumhouse to make another horror film, VIRAL. Not to be hit over the head with the obvious tree, but VIRAL does indeed have to do with a virus that spreads like wildfire, infecting everyone it comes into contact with. The virus here is a parasitic infection dubbed the “Worm Flu” that turns people into sprinting crazies with a desire to vomit worm blood into other people’s mouths. Sounds yummy!!
VIRAL is directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, is written by Christopher Landon and Barbara Marshall, and stars Sofia Black-D’Elia, Analeigh Tipton, Travis Tope, Machine Gun Kelly, Michael Kelly, and Brianne Howey. Check out the plot crunch:
Teenaged sisters Emma (Sofia Black-D’Elia) and Stacey (Analeigh Tipton) live a normal life, until their small suburban neighborhood is stricken with a mysterious parasitic virus. As the disease rapidly spreads throughout the town, the two band together to barricade themselves from infection. But it may already be too late – when the virus enters their home, the sisters are faced with an impossible choice: protect each other, or survive the virus.
VIRAL is slated to hit theaters on July 29, 2016. Until then, enjoy the trailer:
