She’s Having a Baby (2012) & Leaning (2014) … Demons & Crazy Bitches!!

I’m on a roll with short films!! Lately, I’ve been watching some really well-made and engrossing short films. Here are two older shorts that haven’t lost any impact over the years and which are all worth your time.

She's Having a Baby1

SHE’S HAVING A BABY! is expertly directed by Chris Smellin and Robert Smellin and stars just two actors who are confined to one room. The story is simplicity itself. Jenny (Wendy Bos), is a rather unstable woman who wants a baby. Really badly. So badly, in fact, that she kidnaps her (fertile) doctor, ties him to the bed, and rapes him every month when she is ovulating in order to get regnant. I know … I can’t believe she can’t find a husband!! This is just a messed up short (I mean that in the best possible way). Jenny is not a one-note “crazy bitch,” but is a multi-layered character played brilliantly by Bos. She has a crystal clear focus on what she wants, and nothing will stop her.

She's Having a Baby3

The man, Simon (Tommy Clifopoulos), plays his role well, but he is more one-dimensional that Jenny’s character. After Jenny rapes him and doesn’t get pregnant, you’ve got to see the look on Simon’s face when he suggests that maybe she just can’t have a baby. Her reaction was classic, and I’ve never seen a look of feat so wonderfully captured on film!! SHE’S HAVING A BABY! pulls no punches and ends the only possible way this could have ended–on a very nasty and depressing note. Don’t miss it.

LEANING, written and directed by Enrico Conte, plays around with the wore out plot device of a home invasion. A woman (Ketty Volpe), who lives in a very remote house out in the middle of nowhere, hears a radio broadcast about a string of violent home invasions that have plagued the area. The radio warns that if anyone lives in a remote area, to leave until the killer is found. The woman ignores the warning and goes back to her garden. Inside her house, the woman’s two young daughters eat lunch and play, and everything seems idyllic.

And then a strange man appears at the house and everything goes to s**t.

The man is definitely not there with good intentions, but everything isn’t as it first appears. LEANING is a friggin’ blast, and I won’t say anything else about this one. The acting is on point, the cinematography is bleak and washed out and fits the tone of the film perfectly. We also get some fantastic special f/x in this ten minute short. This one is a winner.
