28 Horror Films to Look for in 2017

It’s that time of the year when we look back at the year and pine over the horror selections we got, and look forward with a fresh optimism at what might be. Let’s face it, 2016 was not a good year for horror. At all. Sure, there were some stand outs, but this year was as placid as an eighty-five year old man dating a twenty-two year old. I’ll cover the 2016 year in horror in an upcoming article, but for now let’s look forward and see what 2017 has to offer. This list is, of course, tentative and all the movies’ release dates are subject to change,

January Releases:

UNDERWORLD: BLOOD WARS (January 6, 2017)

Vampire death dealer, Selene (Kate Beckinsale) fights to end the eternal war between the Lycan clan and the Vampire faction that betrayed her.

AMITYVILLE: THE AWAKENING (January 6, 2017)

A single mother moves her three children into a haunted house, unaware of its bloody history.

THE BYE BYE MAN (January 13, 2017)

Three friends stumble upon the horrific origins of the Bye Bye Man, a mysterious figure they discover is the root cause of the evil behind man’s most unspeakable acts.

RESIDENT EVIL: THE FINAL CHAPTER (January 27, 2017)\

Picking up immediately after the events in Resident Evil: Retribution, Alice (Milla Jovovich) is the only survivor of what was meant to be humanity’s final stand against the undead. Now, she must return to where the nightmare began – The Hive in Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a final strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse.

A teenage girl and her little brother must survive a wild 24 hours during which a mass hysteria of unknown origins causes parents to turn violently on their own kids.

CHILDREN OF THE CORN: RUNAWAY (TBA)

Runaway follows a young pregnant Ruth who escapes a murderous child cult in a small Midwestern town. She spends the next decade living anonymously in an attempt to spare her son the horrors that she experienced as a child. She lands in the small Oklahoma town, but something is following her. Now, she must confront this evil or lose her child.

CORBIN NASH (TBA)

A rogue police detective in search of his parents killer is murdered and reborn the ultimate killer.

HALLOWEEN (TBA)

THE DARK TAPES (TBA)

A genre-defying mixture of horror, sci-fi, myth, mystery and thrills told as four interlocking tales in one intelligent anthology. Ghosts, spirits, creatures, demons and more from the paranormal world collide with rational curiosity.

Hhmmm. I gotta say that I am less than stoked for 2017. Out of 28 films, 20 of them–TWENTY–are either a remake or a sequel. Really?? Well, indie horror scene, the ball is in your court. Clearly it will be up to you to give horror fans something original and compelling in 2017.
