Here’s a TV project I can’t wait to sink my teeth into!!  The FX network is developing the novel, THE STRAIN, written by  Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, into a series for their network.  The novel is a trilogy and if this is successful and done well I think the potential is there to blow THE WALKING DEAD off the airwaves.  Now according to deadline.com, BREAKING DAWN’S Mia Maestro is set to star opposite Corey Stoll in the project.  THE STRAIN which formally had a pilot order, is now being eyed for a 13-episode series pickup.

The Strain is a high-concept thriller that tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Stoll), the head of the Centers for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. Actress-singer Maestro, repped by ICM Partners and 3 Arts, plays Dr. Nora Martinez, who works so closely with Ephraim, they finish each other’s sentences and stumble into an affair. A brilliant biochemist, Martinez cares more about people than the diseases that threaten them, but she will soon be forced to embrace a new identity as a ruthless warrior. Del Toro will direct the pilot from a script he co-wrote with Chuck Hogan, who also co-authored the books with del Toro.

Goddamn this sounds awesome!!  A huge thanks to my buddy Bill Walsh who originally turned me on to the original novel.  It’s some fantastic reading if you haven’t checked it out yet!!

 AUSTRALIAN FILM ‘BARROW’ CASTS LEAD PERFORMER

Psychological Thriller Slated to shoot Late 2013

Perth, Western Australia, 15^TH May 2013 - Australian Film Directors Peter Gurbiel and Wade K. Savage are proud to announce they have cast the lead of their upcoming short film ‘Barrow’. 

Amanda Woodhams (‘Mental’, ‘Cloud Street’) will take on the role of Carly Jacobs, an aspiring forensic entomologist who must come to grips with the night her Father murdered her Mother. 

The film is their second collaboration between both filmmakers’ Production Companies (Gurbiel’s Hometown Pictures and Savage’s Encryption Films). Savage will direct the script written by both Gurbiel and himself. Both will produce, with Gurbiel acting as the Executive Producer.

Woodhams had this to say on the news “Having worked with Wade and watched his craftsmanship grow with each new project I’m thrilled to be collaborating with him on Barrow. I’m also excited to work with Peter and other new creatives for the first time.”

Producer/Writer Peter Gurbiel also commented: “This is the second trip around the block for this creative team and I can’t wait to get stuck into ‘Barrow’ – another exciting venture into bold and visually stimulating drama. I’m personally pleased to welcome Amanda on board – her striking presence and keen sensitivity to the material is something I’m looking forward to watching unravel as we head closer to production.”

Director Wade K. Savage commented on Woodham’s Casting: “I’ve had the pleasure to work with Amanda on a short spec film I did in 2010 (‘Hunt’). She’s an incredibly talented performer with a succinct and amazing intensity – perfect for Carly.” 

‘Barrow’ is funded through the Film and Television Institute’s LiNK Funding Scheme, with added support from ScreenWest. 

The film is already in heavy Pre-Production with Principal Photography to take place later in the year.

STORY SUMMARY

Twenty years to the day that her Father murdered her Mother, Carly Jacobs is returned her childhood jewellery box that had been confiscated with the police investigation. Initially providing little to unlock the mystery of that horrible night, Carly returns the box to her long abandoned family home where she finds that both time and memory are more connected than she could ever have imagined possible.

ABOUT THE TEAM 

Amanda Woodhams’s roles have been praised, varied and widespread. She appeared in the Australian-Canadian television adventure series Stormworld, and the Showtime series Cloudstreet directed by AACTA Award winning director Mather Saville. She played the lead in Nakatomi’s feature film Sororal and recently worked alongside Toni Collette and Rebecca Gibney in PJ Hogan’s latest film Mental. She currently splits her time between Australia and Los Angeles. 

Peter Gurbiel has written and directed several short films, including the anticipated ‘One Night Only’, also funded through FTI and ScreenWest. Currently developing key feature-length projects, ‘Barrow’ is his second collaboration with Wade K. Savage’s Encryption Films following their soon to be released production ‘The Owl’.

Wade K. Savage is an award winning theatre and film director. His short films have screened globally. His most recent short film ‘The Owl’ is in Post Production and is slated for a 2013 release.  His previous film “Hunt” (2011) screened at the Bram Stoker International Film Festival. His 2010 short “The Dead Wastes” won the Night of Horror International Film Festival’s coveted ‘Independent Spirit’ award.

Bloodmarsh Krackoon is a feature length horror comedy written and directed by Jerry Landi and produced by Marc J. Makowski. Both filmmakers are lifelong residents of the Bronx, which is reflected in the film’s depiction of the beleaguered New York borough. The film is a co- production between Landi’s Amuck Duck Films and South Bronx EFX Works, co-run by Makowski, the producer of the cult classic Slime City, its sequel Slime City Massacre, and Snow Shark: Ancient Snow Beast.

Bloodmarsh Krackoon serves as both a sequel to and a reboot of Landi’s previous film, Krackoon, which won Best Horror Feature and Best Cult Feature at the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival in 2010. Krackoon also screened at Another Hole in the Head in San Francisco and at Buffalo Screams Horror Film Festival.

Krackoon told the story of Tommy Caputo (Joseph Ferri), a boy who befriends Red Eye, a mutant raccoon addicted to crack cocaine. The comedy horror film portrayed a Bronx community victimized by political corruption as much as by the titular creature, who ultimately becomes a force for transformation in a showdown with the corrupt mayor of Locust Point.

Festival audiences reacted enthusiastically to the film, but Landi faced a hurdle when it came to seeking distribution: the film only ran an hour, too short for commercial purposes. Landi believed his story and characters warranted further exploration, and in a quest to bring his concepts to a wider audience he wrote a feature length sequel. The challenge was telling a story that continued the first film’s themes while presenting it as a new animal for audiences unfamiliar with the original. Sam Raimi faced a similar challenge with Evil Dead 2, and Robert Rodriguez with Desperado.

Landi attributes the greater scope of Bloodmarsh Krackoon to Makowski, who was not involved in the original production. “I knew Marc’s credits when we met, and after seeing Krackoon, he asked what I was working on next. I showed him the script
for Bloodmarsh Krackoon and he offered to do the animatronics and CGI, which was an offer I couldn’t refuse. He really believed in the concept, and pushed me to make a film that did it justice.”

Bloodmarsh Krackoon Synopsis

Bloodmarsh Krackoon takes place one day after the events of Krackoon, which depicted the murderous rampage of Redeye, a crack addicted mutant raccoon. In the first film, Redeye administered righteous revenge to crooked Bronx politicians and the abusive parents of his only human friend, Tommy Caputo (Joseph Ferri).

On the night of the murders, two workers from Balzone Industries (Anthony Landi, Joe Brynne) illegally dump toxic waste in the Locust Point marshlands and stumble upon the massacre inflicted by Redeye and Tommy. They escape the marsh and two baby raccoons ingest the waste, which causes them to mutate.

The next day, police chief Patton (Bob Connelly) and deputy mayor Peter Rabbit (Sal Amore) visit the scene of the murders and are shocked to discover that mayor Karl Denham was among the victims. Rabbit is the only person alive besides Tommy who knows that Redeye is behind the mayhem.

Tommy and Redeye, living on the street, come upon Halperin Home, an assisted living facility, and are taken in by Millie Rabbit (Cindy Guyer), the deputy mayor’s mother, and her friend Lucy (Diane Landi ). Meanwhile, Rabbit enlists his cousin Scott (Scott Barile) and his best friend Marty (Martin Vanihel) to track down the krackoon and hopefully end its bloody rampage. The baby raccoons begin their own path of destruction.

In order to evade prison, gangster and businessmen Benny Balzone (Rosario Russo) fakes insanity and is sent to Halperin Home, where nurse Sue Carter (Gina DiSalvatore Longarzo) discovers Tommy and takes him. Tommy introduces Sue to Redeye, who is soon reunited with the baby raccoons. In an act of cruelty, Balzone’s criminal lawyer sets off a chain reaction which results in Redeye’s assault on Halperin Home.

Bloodmarsh Krackoon, a horror comedy, was shot entirely in the Bronx. In order to show the true flavor of the borough, mainly Bronx actors were hired to play the lead roles, making this film a real homegrown product.

HELL BABY, a comedy scripted by Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant (Night at The Museum, Reno 911!: Miami) marks their co-directing debut. Jack (Rob Corddry) and Vanessa (Leslie Bibb) are an expectant couple that moves into the most haunted fixer-upper in New Orleans — a house with a deadly demonic curse. Aurelio Voltaire to direct film version of his comic book OH MY GOTH!:

an irreverent, comedic trip through horror and science fiction

“Monsters, rock and roll, comedy and sex”

(May 7th, 2013 – New York City, NY) – On behalf of musician and filmmaker Aurelio Voltaire, we’re excited to announce his upcoming full-length film as director: an adaptation of his comic book OH MY GOTH! featuring his musical talents.

Synopsis: 

When the reanimated skeletons of Necronus, a cemetery planet across the dark expanse of space, decide they need Earth paved into a landing strip, they send, possibly the worst of their agents to undertake the task. Arrogant, pompous and not the brightest laser in the arsenal, Heironymous Poshe , takes on human form and travels to Earth aboard his Black Spire, a space ship that could easily pass for a giant, black cathedral. However, Poshe has plans of his own, namely to avoid a desk job on the Necrid home world and live a life of leisure in a fixed orbit above Earth. For centuries, Poshe (along with his robot slave and an imprisoned midget) has avoided his prime directive. Instead he has spent his time abducting Earth women, celebrities and bands for a non-stop, nightly party above the Black Spire.

But Poshe’s days of care-free, hot-babe abduction are coming to an end. Tired of Poshe’s lack or results, Lord Krom Wrath, supreme ruler of the Necrus, launches a full scale invasion of Earth. Poshe bands with the only people on Earth who understand his cause (a group of Goth kids, a cadre of ninja priests and a small army of Hasidic Rabbis- ironically, all of them people who wear all black!) to repel the oncoming armada of Necrid ships. The final space battle is the “Jews in Space” Mel Brooks promised us and never delivered!

After performing worldwide onstage, directing commercially, and following the film festival circuit with his stop-motion animated films, Voltaire will now direct a feature film based on his own comic work. The feature version of OH MY GOTH! will have that strange brand of dark comedy and music that he has been performing at Goth clubs and sci-fi and horror conventions across the land.

“It was time to finally unite my storytelling, my music, my twisted humor and filmmaking sensibilities all into one project,” says Voltaire. “It has all the things I love: monsters, rock and roll, comedy and sex mashed into a giant ball of awesome.”

Producer Keryn Thompson is very excited about the content: “There’s loud music. There’s scantily clad girls. There’s Satan,” she says. 

James Morgart, also producing, says that he joined the project because “Voltaire’s material stretches across so many genres that he sort of encompasses every bastardized sub-genre to be associated with the Gothic tradition since Walpole’s Castle of Otranto.  His plans for this film are to give his fans all of their favorite aspects of his work: music, animation, and subversively witty humor.”

OH MY GOTH! the film is currently in pre-production and will shoot in the New York City metro area.

About Voltaire
Aurelio Voltaire is a media personality and respected authority on all things Gothic, Horror, Sci-fi, Steampunk and involving “geek” culture. He is often referred to as a modern day renaissance man having achieved success in the fields of animation, music, comics, books and toys.

Voltaire’s career began in the 1980s as a stop-motion animator and director, creating some of the award-winning, classic MTV and SyFy channel station IDs. He worked in television, animating and directing commercials for nearly twenty years when he realized it was time for him to tell his own stories. Finding comic books to be a vastly more economical tool than feature films Voltaire told his first epic tale, “Chi-chian” in comic book form. This dark, Cinderella story set in Manhattan’s future, was published and led to a 14-episode animated web series directed by Voltaire for the SyFy channel’s website. His success in comic books also led to several underground hits including the comic book series Oh My Goth!, Human Suck! and most recently Deady. His songs are a strange brew of murder ballads, tongue-in-cheek exercises in the macabre with just enough bawdy Star Trek and Star Wars songs to keep convention audiences rolling in the aisles. Many in the mainstream know Voltaire as the writer and performer of the songs Brains! and Land of the Dead from the Cartoon Network show, The Grim Adventures of Billy And Mandy. Almost constantly on tour, he has played his music around the world and released eleven full length CDs to date.

Voltaire also wrote the popular books What is Goth? and Paint it Black: a Guide to Gothic Homemaking (Weiser Books) and has appeared on numerous television shows and documentaries as an authority on Goth, Horror and Steampunk. Appearances include Fox News, Biography, MTV News, Fearnet, IFC, PBS and others.

When not touring, writing books or designing toys, Voltaire teaches stop-motion animation at the School of Visual arts and continues to make short films. His “Chimerascope” series of stop-motion shorts are perennial film festival favorites. The five shorts have won a combined 31 awards and feature the voice talents of Deborah Harry, Richard Butler, Gerard Way, Gary Numan and Danny Elfman.

No info yet on when any of these films can be seen.  Call me crazy, but it always seems the good people at After Dark spend all this money to make these films and then they do a horrible job at marketing and distributing them.  They seem to work very hard at having their films not seen.  I’ve tried for years to get screeners to their films (as have many other horror sites) and we’re told time and again that they don’t send out screeners.  It’s almost like they’re not proud of their product.  Hhmmm …
