The Grudge Gets the Reboot Treatment

Here we go again. The horror hit THE GRUDGE started out as a hit Japanese film, JU-ON back in 2002. It was written and directed by Takashi Shimizu and was a runaway hit. It took your average ghost story and amped up the creep factor 100-fold. I’ve mentioned before that I’m not really a huge fan of J-horror but JU-ON really captured some amazingly creepy visuals. JU-ON was such a success that in 2004 it got the remake treatment. But in a smart decision they kept on the original director (Takashi Shimizu) and it was still set in Japan. Nice moves!! The remake, titled THE GRUDGE, went on to become a huge hit. Made for about $10 million, THE GRUDGE grossed about $187 million worldwide.

You know a bunch of Hollywood execs ears have pricked up.

The Grudge 1

Now THE GRUDGE is getting the reboot treatment. Deadline is reporting that Ghost House Pictures and Good Universe will be relaunching the franchise. Deadline also reports that Jeff Buhler (who wrote MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN) is set to write the reboot;

The new one will be produced by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Taka Ichise, with Roy Lee, Doug Davison, Joe Drake and Nathan Kahane exec producing.

I really don’t see how the 2004 film can be improved upon story-wise but what the hell. In this article Deadline also mentions that Buhler is also hard at work on a new version of JACOB’S LADDER. This, dear readers, does’t sit well with me at all!! We’re going to get a CGI-laddened, soulless JACOB’S LADDER remake. The original is a damn neat perfect film with some of the best performances I’ve seen in a genre film. Oh well.

What do you think? Ready for a rebooted THE GRUDGE? Ready for a remake of JACOB’S LADDER?

Stay Bloody!!!

    Found the the first GRUDGE movie a bit hard to swallow. I was a huge BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER fanboy growing up and the idea of Buffy being scared by a ghost was just laughable to me. Really liked the second and the third film in that series though. Bit disappointment that we won’t get a fourth one. Absolutely loved the new ghost at the end of GRUDGE 3. She was awesome!!! Reboot could be good though I’d be interested to see it at least.

    JACOB’S LADDER – What’s the point really? I mean if you’ve seen it you already know what it’s all about. I still feel really cheated with this movie. Someone told me literally everything that happened in this film right before we sat down and watched it. I mean I still really enjoy this movie and still think it is a very good movie but whenever I think of JACOB’S LADDER I just think that I lost something special of this film and missed out big time when I saw it, which kind of just makes me annoyed and not really want to watch it again. Unless they drastically change more or less everything in JACOB’S LADDER I think most people will experience a similar feeling to what I had because everything is already know – at least for those who have already seen it. And for those that haven’t seen it then why not just watch the original because it is a masterpiece in it’s own right. And if they do drastically change everything (which is the only way it’ll be any good) will it really be JACOB’S LADDER any more?

      Also punch that bitch in the face!!! You better believe that if she’s coming at me then I’m grabbing the nearest blunt object, preferably a baseball bat or a lead pipe and bashing her helling head in. I don’t care if she’s already dead, if I’m gonna die then I’m gonna go out swinging! It amazes me than none of the characters in all 3 movies don’t try this. Come on Buffy, sout it out!!! 😛
